The history of Mafa Local Government Area (LGA) is deeply intertwined with the cultural

overseen by local chiefs and district heads who managed the affairs of their communities
and reported to the Shehu of Borno, the supreme ruler of the Borno Emirate. During the
British colonial era, these structures were formalized, and Mafa was officially
recognized as a local government authority within the new administrative framework.

Kanuri ethnic group, the people of Mafa have preserved their language, customs, and

The transition from a traditional district under the Borno Emirate to a modern Local
Government Area has brought about numerous changes. With a growing population, which
stood at 103,518 according to the 2006 census, Mafa has undergone urbanization and

governance structures have been strengthened to meet the needs of its people.
Under the leadership of notable figures such as Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, an
indigenous son of Mafa, the LGA has seen accelerated development in recent years. New
schools, healthcare centers, roads, and agricultural programs have been introduced to
uplift the lives of the people. The local government has also taken bold steps to
address issues such as youth unemployment, gender inequality, and access to clean water,
ensuring that Mafa remains on the path to sustainable development.
